Prepaid balance and gift cards
Tirelire by MEGH is a prepaid wallet for your customers: they top up at checkout, then pay for purchases by showing their phone, without taking out their bank card. You can also sell gift cards, given with a simple link.
Enabled by the MEGH team, with or without Fidèle
The Balance tab appears once Tirelire by MEGH is enabled for your shop. It works on its own or with Fidèle: with Fidèle, the balance and the stamps are on the same card but stay independent. The balance can only be used at your shop.
Without Fidèle, the Customers tab holds the counter poster, the checkout devices and your customer list with their balance. Customers create their balance by scanning the poster, just like a Fidèle card.
1. Your settings
In the Balance tab, you can:
- offer a top-up bonus (for example €5 offered from €50 topped up);
- choose the limit for QR payments without confirmation (€30 by default, between €1 and €500). Up to this amount, a payment is charged straight away; above it, the customer also confirms on their phone;
- choose the gift card validity (12 months by default, between 1 and 36 months).
2. Top up a customer's balance
Collect the amount first
In cash or by card, on your usual register.
Scan the customer's card
As for a stamp: the checkout page shows their balance.
Enter the amount and tap “Top up”
Confirm: the balance shows on the customer's phone, with any bonus.
3. Pay for a purchase with the balance
The customer pays by showing their payment QR code, just like tapping a contactless bank card.
The customer taps “Pay with my balance”
On their card (their phone), a payment QR code appears. It changes every 30 seconds and only works once.
Scan this QR code with the checkout phone
With the camera, like a customer's card. Your screen shows the customer's first name and balance.
Enter the purchase amount and tap “Charge”
Up to your limit, it is charged straight away: your screen shows “Paid ✓” and the new balance, and so does the customer's phone within a few seconds. Never more than their balance.
Above the limit
For an amount above your limit, the customer also confirms on their phone: a “Payment to confirm” request appears on their card, and your screen shows “Confirmed by the customer ✓” as soon as they accept.
Why it's safe
- The QR code only works once: a photo or a screenshot can't be used to pay again.
- Only a checkout of your shop can charge: you, signed in to your space, or a checkout device (an employee's phone). Scanned by anyone else, the QR code only shows an explanation.
- The first checkout that scans it reserves it and has 3 minutes to charge. For another purchase, the customer shows a new code.
Another option: scan the customer's card as for a stamp, enter the amount and tap “Charge the balance”. The customer then confirms on their phone.
Wrong amount?
“Cancel the last operation” cancels the card's last top-up (with its bonus) or last payment, within 15 minutes. The cancellation is recorded in the activity.
4. Sell a gift card
Collect the amount at checkout
Then tap “Sell a gift card” (checkout page or Balance tab).
Enter the amount, and optionally a first name and a short note
Tap “Create gift card”.
Give it
Have the QR code scanned, or send the link by WhatsApp. The recipient adds it to their balance (creating their card in 10 seconds if needed). Each gift card works only once.
5. Follow your balance
The Balance tab shows your customers' total balance (what they can still spend at your shop), top-ups and payments over 30 days, gift cards sold and the activity, with the checkout that made each operation. A card that still holds money can't be deleted.
6. VAT and accounting
In the settings, choose when VAT on the balance is due. The tab then shows, month by month, what to declare (and exports it to Excel):
- At top-up and gift card sale: your shop applies a single rate (for example a dry cleaner, at 20%). Top-ups and gift cards are advances on your services: VAT is due when they're collected, and purchases later paid with the balance aren't taxed a second time.
- When a purchase is paid with the balance: your shop applies several rates (café, bakery…). VAT is due at purchase, at the rate of what's bought.
- No VAT: your shop is VAT-exempt (art. 293 B CGI).
In every case, bonuses offered aren't taxed: they're discounts.
A help, not tax advice
If in doubt, ask your tax office (messaging in your professional account on impots.gouv.fr, or a free tax ruling request), your chamber of commerce or an accountant.
